TEAM > IMDEA water

The IMDEA Water Institute belongs to the IMDEA (Institutos Madrileños de Estudios Avanazados) network of the Community of Madrid and is devoted to the study of water quality and water management issues through the design and development of excellent research.

The mission of the IMDEA Water Institute is to produce scientific knowledge that helps to advance understanding, inform decisions and shape policies concerning the sustainable use of water resources, encouraging public and private partnerships, and involving regulatory and institutional bodies into the research process.

The IMDEA Water Institute is organized into four major research lines: sustainable management of water bodies, water treatment and reuse, economic and institutional analysis, and water quality and pollution. Each strategic line is formed by several research groups.

The Ecotoxicology group, which participates in the CICLIC project, is formed by experts on aquatic ecology, environmental toxicology and applied chemistry, and is dedicated to assess the impact of chemical and non-chemical stressors on the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems.

Andreu Rico

IMDEA Water Institute

Andreu Rico obtained his PhD on Environmental Sciences, with specialization on aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology, from Wageningen University (the Netherlands). He currently works as researcher at the Ecotoxicology group of the IMDEA Water Institute. His work focuses on assessing the ecotoxicological risks of contaminants on aquatic populations and communities in a global climate change scenario. His research is crucial to understand how ecosystems respond to continued pressures and to predict biodiversity declines. He also develops tools to improve the prospective and retrospective risk assessment of chemicals, and contributes to the development of sustainable environmental policies.

Marco Vighi

IMDEA Water Institute

Research Assistant at the Institute of Water Research of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) from 1970 to 1983. Professor of Ecology, Applied Ecology and Ecotoxicology at the Universities of Milano and Milano-Bicocca from 1983 to 2015. Coordinator of the Ecotoxicology research group of the University of Milano-Bicocca up to 2015. Since 2015 he is Principal Investigator at the IMDEA Water Institute where he is responsible of the Ecotoxicology research group. His scientific activity is mainly oriented toward applied ecology and ecological risk assessment of chemicals and additional multiple stressors.
Member of the Scientific Advisory Committees on Toxicology and Ecotoxicology of the European Commission, DG SANCO (CSTE, CSTEE, SCHER, SCHEER) from 1991 to date.

Claudia Martínez-Megías

IMDEA Water Institute

Since 2014 Claudia has collaborated in different experiments performing field sampling and identification of freshwater invertebrates. On the private sector, she have worked in environmental consultry working in projects of limnological quality and invasive species monitoring at several River Basins, as well as in supporting and monitoring tasks related to hydrological plans. Currently she works as a predoctoral student within ECOREST subproject. Her research focuses on assessing the resilience of aquatic communities to pesticides by using ecotoxicological techniques and under the context of climate change.
